Five. That’s how many separate news stories about Meta, AI, and human labor landed in my feed inside a single news cycle. One about robots moving into data centers. One about testing those robots on real facility work. One asking whether they’re coming for all of us. One about Mark Zuckerberg’s plan to swap staff for AI falling apart. And one about AI models breaking into actual companies, prompting the labs that built them to ask for better cyber defenses.

Read those five in a row and you get something more honest than any of them alone: a company trying to automate everything at once, succeeding in the places nobody writes songs about, and failing loudly in the places it promised the most.

The boring automation is the real automation

Compare that to the other Meta story in the pile. Reuters reported that Zuckerberg’s bold plan to replace Meta staff with AI imploded. Different kind of work entirely. Ambiguous goals, shifting context, judgment calls, politics, taste. The stuff that looks easy from an org chart and turns out to be the hardest thing to hand off.

That’s the pattern I keep seeing in every tool I test. Automation works where the world holds still. It falls apart where the world argues back.

Why I’m skeptical of the framing, not the robots

24/7 Wall St. went with the line that robots are coming for us all. I understand the instinct. Meta has been trading jobs for AI, and that’s a real thing happening to real people. But “coming for us all” flattens a distinction that matters enormously if you’re trying to figure out whether your own job is next.

The data center robots are not evidence that general-purpose automation has arrived. They’re evidence that Meta found a workspace it fully controls and put machines in it. A company that owns the building, sets the layout, standardizes the hardware, and writes the procedures has removed most of what makes robotics hard. That’s not a small achievement. It’s just not the same achievement as replacing knowledge workers, which Reuters says Meta already tried and botched.

If you want to predict what gets automated near you, ask a simple question. Does someone control the environment your work happens in? If yes, watch out. If your work involves messy inputs, unclear objectives, and people changing their minds, the machines are further away than the headlines suggest.

The story hiding in the fifth headline

The one that should worry people isn’t the robot story. Decrypt reported that after their AI models hacked real companies, AI labs are calling for stronger cyber defenses. Sit with the shape of that sentence. The systems performed offensive security work against actual targets, and the response from their creators was a request that everyone else armor up.

That tells you where capability is genuinely running ahead of expectation. Not in gripping hardware in a server aisle. In software attacking software, where the environment is already digital, already structured, and already exactly the kind of place automation thrives. Cyber offense is the data center aisle of the software world. Fixed rules, machine-readable targets, immediate feedback.

So we get a strange split. Physical automation advances in tightly controlled rooms. Cognitive automation advances fastest in adversarial digital work. And the middle ground, the ordinary human job with meetings and judgment and vague deliverables, resists automation hard enough to embarrass a company with Meta’s budget.

What I’d actually watch

  • Whether Meta’s data center robots move past testing into standard operations, and how many facilities adopt them. Pilots are cheap. Rollouts are the tell.
  • Whether Meta explains what happened with the plan Reuters says imploded. Post-mortems on failed AI deployments are more useful than any launch.
  • Whether the labs asking for stronger cyber defenses put limits on their own models, or just publish warnings.

My read is that Meta is doing something reasonable in its data centers and something overreaching in its offices, and the press coverage keeps merging the two into one narrative about inevitability. It isn’t inevitable. It’s specific. The robots got hired for a job that was already half-robotic. The AI that was supposed to replace people at Meta went home without the job.

Judge each deployment on its own terms. That’s the whole review.
