Everyone keeps telling you that the only funding worth talking about is the nine-figure mega-round. The AI world runs on headlines about billions, and if a deal doesn’t come with a valuation that makes your eyes water, it gets ignored. That’s the mainstream take, and I think it’s mostly wrong.
Portugal’s Angels Way is quietly doing something that looks smarter than half the loud money sloshing around Silicon Valley right now. The group has funded four AI startups and is closing in on 20 total investments by 2026. No fireworks. No hype cycle. Just a community of 436 angel investors writing checks of up to €50,000 per deal, with a fund targeting €1 million into Portuguese tech startups. And honestly? That restraint is the story.
Why Small Checks Matter More Than You Think
A €50,000 check doesn’t sound like much. In an era where AI startups burn that in a weekend of GPU rentals, it almost sounds quaint. But that’s exactly the point. Small, early checks force discipline. Founders who raise modest sums have to prove something works before they get to spend big. The bloated seed rounds we’ve watched over the past two years produced a graveyard of AI wrappers with pretty landing pages and no actual product underneath.
Angels Way, one of the funds managed by OW Ventures, focuses on early-stage technology. That means they’re betting on people and ideas before the market has decided whether those ideas deserve to exist. It’s riskier per deal, but spreading small amounts across roughly 20 companies is a rational way to play a space where nobody actually knows which AI tools survive contact with real users.
Nixar and the Influencer Marketing Question
One of the funded startups, Nixar, runs an AI influencer marketing platform and plans to expand internationally. Now, I’ll be straight with you: “AI influencer marketing platform” is the kind of phrase that makes me instinctively reach for my skeptic hat. That category is crowded, and a lot of it is glorified spreadsheet automation dressed up with a chatbot.
But international expansion off the back of an angel round is at least a signal that someone is paying for the thing. That’s more than you can say for a lot of AI startups that raise on a demo and a dream. Whether Nixar’s platform actually holds up under scrutiny is a review I’d want to run myself before I cheer. Expansion plans are cheap. Retention numbers are the truth serum. I’ll believe it when I see the churn data.
Portugal Is Building Something Real
Here’s what I find genuinely interesting. Angels Way isn’t operating in a vacuum. Portugal’s startup scene has been putting up numbers lately. BRAINR, a food industry software company, extended a seed round to €1.5 million. Neuraspace landed €15.6 million for AI-enabled space safety and defense work. The country’s funding priorities line up with Portugal 2030 and EU innovation policy, which favor AI, biotech, climate tech, and deeptech.
That policy alignment matters more than most people give it credit for. When a national strategy, EU money, and private angel capital all point in the same direction, you get an ecosystem that can actually sustain companies past the demo stage. Portugal has been building this quietly while everyone in tech media stared at the same five American labs.
The Part I’m Watching
Twenty deals by 2026 is a specific, checkable target, and I respect a fund that puts a number on the board. Most VCs speak in vague ambitions so nobody can hold them accountable. Angels Way said 20, and they’re near it with four AI startups already in. That’s a scoreboard.
My concern is the same one I have with every angel-driven AI portfolio: distribution over selection. Spreading €50,000 checks across a lot of companies protects the fund, but it can also mean nobody gets enough capital to actually break through. AI is expensive to build well. The winners tend to need more than a starter check to hit escape velocity. Follow-on funding will decide whether these four AI startups become real businesses or nice line items in a fund’s annual report.
Still, I’d rather see this than another billion-dollar round for a company with no revenue and a founder who talks like a prophet. Angels Way is making small, disciplined, policy-aligned bets in a country that’s actually earning its place on the map. That’s not the flashy version of AI investing. It might be the smart one. I’ll be watching the next 16 deals closely, and I’ll call it honestly when the results come in.
